What is BMP Converter?

Format notes
- BMP: An old, uncompressed bitmap format. Files are large, so converting BMP to PNG or JPG normally saves a lot of space.
- PNG: A lossless format that keeps sharp edges and supports transparency, which makes it a good choice for logos, screenshots and graphics. Photos saved as PNG are often much larger than JPG.
Tips for better results
BMP files are uncompressed, so converting them to PNG (lossless) or JPG (smaller) is usually worthwhile before emailing or uploading.
A worked example
A scanner saved a 14 MB BMP. Converting it to PNG keeps the full quality and typically reduces the file to a fraction of that size, so it is far easier to email or upload.
If something goes wrong
- The result is still large. Photographs stay large as PNG. Run the PNG through PNG to JPG if a small size matters more than lossless quality.
- The file does not open. Make sure it is a real BMP and not another format with a .bmp name.
Privacy and limits
