What is Image Compressor?
Reduce image file size with adjustable quality and instant previews. It accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP files and gives you a COMPRESSED result you can download straight away. The work happens in your browser tab, so the file you choose is not uploaded to our servers.
How to use Image Compressor
- Choose the image you want to shrink.
- Set the quality between 0.1 and 1. Values around 0.6 to 0.8 usually keep a photo looking natural while cutting file size.
- Click Convert now and compare the new file size with the original.
- Download the compressed image if you are happy with the result, or lower or raise the quality and try again.
Format notes
- JPG: A lossy format that suits photographs and produces small files. It does not support transparency.
- JPEG: The same format as JPG (the two extensions are interchangeable). Best for photos, not for logos or screenshots with sharp text.
- PNG: A lossless format that keeps sharp edges and supports transparency, which makes it a good choice for logos, screenshots and graphics. Photos saved as PNG are often much larger than JPG.
- WEBP: A modern web format that is usually smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and supports transparency. Supported by all current major browsers.
- COMPRESSED: The output keeps the original image format with a smaller file size. Lower quality settings give smaller files.
Tips for better results
Compress a copy rather than your only original, and look at the result at 100% zoom before you publish it.
A worked example
A 3.5 MB photograph from your phone needs to fit an email. Run it at the default quality of 0.72 and expect a big reduction. If it is still too big, resize it first with the image resizer, because fewer pixels save more than lower quality.
If something goes wrong
- The file barely changed. It may already be well compressed, or it may be a PNG, which is lossless and responds little to the quality setting. Reduce its dimensions or convert it to WEBP.
- The picture looks blocky. The quality is too low. Raise it by 0.05 and try again; values between 0.7 and 0.85 suit most photographs.
Privacy and limits
Because processing happens locally, very large files depend on your device's memory and may be slow on older phones. If a conversion fails, try a smaller file or a different browser. See our privacy policy for details on how the site handles data.
