What is JPG to PNG?

How to use JPG to PNG

Format notes
- JPG: A lossy format that suits photographs and produces small files. It does not support transparency.
- JPEG: The same format as JPG (the two extensions are interchangeable). Best for photos, not for logos or screenshots with sharp text.
- PNG: A lossless format that keeps sharp edges and supports transparency, which makes it a good choice for logos, screenshots and graphics. Photos saved as PNG are often much larger than JPG.
Tips for better results
Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail that JPEG compression already removed, but it does stop further quality loss when you edit and re-save the file. Expect the PNG to be larger than the original.
A worked example
You have a 1.8 MB JPG logo that a print shop wants as PNG. Convert it and you will get a PNG of the same pixel size, probably larger than 1.8 MB, with no visible change. The PNG will not have a transparent background, because the JPG never had one.
If something goes wrong
- The PNG is much bigger than the JPG. That is normal. PNG stores every pixel without discarding detail. If size matters more than lossless storage, keep the JPG or try WEBP.
- Edges still look blocky. JPG compression already created those artifacts. Converting cannot remove them; start from a higher-quality original if you have one.
Privacy and limits
